What is PDF JobReady?

Adobe PDF JobReady v3.0 enables print providers to offer more secure Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) print workflows that begin at their customers’ desktops and extend across the Internet to the final output device. PDF JobReady is available exclusively from Datalogics, Inc. to OEMs, ASPs, ISV integrators, and enterprise IT developers.

PDF JobReady is delivered as a software developer toolkit (SDK) which can be used as the backbone for print-and-submit workflow applications. Using the SDK, developers build PDF JobReady client components distributed as customized printer drivers. End users print using this driver, initiating a process which creates a more secure PDF file; offers clientside preview; captures job information; and delivers the entire package to the server for processing. The PDF file is created on the client side, enabling all the fonts and necessary resources to be collected, in accordance with the specific requirements of the print provider. As a result, compatibility on the server is virtually guaranteed, and job wastage is practically eliminated. PDF JobReady is used worldwide in “quick print” franchise operations as well as corporate print management solutions.

Why use PDF JobReady?

Print workflow applications which utilize PDF JobReady as the job submission mechanism can virtually eliminate many of the common problems which occur during the print job submission process:

  • Fonts not embedded; Graphics wrong resolution or color model - Studies show that 67% of jobs submitted to print service providers (PSPs) fail due to file submission errors. Fonts may be missing from the submitted job; color models are incorrectly specified; and associated graphics files are sometimes inadvertently omitted. When this occurs, the PSP must ask that the job (or the missing components) be resubmitted.

For the PSP, this means added cost (and lower margin); more complexity in the job workflow; and increased customer satisfaction problems.

For the user submitting the job, this means added work, increased frustration level, and a longer wait for delivery of the completed job.

  • No Job Preview - Another common problem in the job submission workflow is that the user often cannot obtain an accurate job preview. The final result may be completely different from what is expected, due to differences in software environments between the user and the PSP. As a result, finished jobs can be rejected as "not what it's supposed to look like", and the cycle starts again.

PDF JobReady addresses both these problems by implementing a secure, controlled PDF-based workflow. PSPs can ensure that all submitted jobs are complete and correctly set up for their own equipment. Users can preview jobs prior to submission, and since the preview is device-independent PDF, the preview will be identical to the final output. And overall, job resubmissions are drastically reduced.
