10 Reasons Why Technology is Important in the Classroom

As the mother of an 8th grader, it is often difficult to get information about her day.  Honestly, this is how our conversations would be written on most days:

Me:  “How was school?”
Her:  “Fine.”
Me:  “Did you do anything fun today?”
Her:  “No.”
Me:  “Was there anything that made you laugh today?”
Her:  “No.”

I crave something, anything, that gives me insight into her day-to-day world, and I am delighted when she shares even small snippets. I would say, more often than not, the times when I get more than a single word answer are when teachers take the normal out of her school day. I remember her lesson on investing: she had an online investment tool, fake money, and had to pick and manage stocks. She talked about her portfolio often but, of course, stopped talking about it when she started losing her pretend money. Other moments included her online math activities, her PowerPoint presentation on her scientific experiment on slime, and the time she had to plan an entire Greek vacation including flights, hotels and excursions for her teacher. She chatted away about that many evenings.

It occurred to me that it wasn’t just the lesson – it was also the fact that technology was a core component of the task that held her interest and created excitement. Today’s students are different than 10 years ago, and technology it now critical in the classroom. So I am re-sharing the ten reasons why technology is important in the classroom as published by Secure Edge Networks.

  1. If used correctly, it will help prepare students for their future careers, which will inevitably include the use of wireless technology.
  2. Integrating technology into the classroom is definitely a great way to reach diversity in learning styles.
  3. It gives students the chance to interact with their classmates more by encouraging collaboration.
  4. Technology helps the teachers prepare students for the real world environment. As our nation becomes increasingly more technology-dependent, it becomes even more necessary that to be successful citizens, students must learn to be tech-savvy.
  5. Integrating technology in education everyday helps students stay engaged. Today’s students love technology, so they are sure to be interested in learning if they can use the tools they love.
  6. With technology, the classroom is a happier place. Students are excited about being able to use technology and therefore are more apt to learn.
  7. When mobile technology is readily available in the classroom, students are able to access the most up-to-date information quicker and easier than ever before.
  8. The traditional passive learning mold is broken. With technology in the classroom the teacher becomes the encourager, adviser, and coach.
  9. Students become more responsible. Technology helps students take more control over their own learning. They learn how to make their own decisions and actually think for themselves.
  10. Students can have access to digital textbooks that are constantly updated and often more vivid, helpful, creative, and a lot cheaper than those old heavy books.

As Datalogics continues to expand the scope of our eReading technology beyond online stores and focuses on the user experience, I am reminded of how awesome our READynamic™ product is at enhancing the connection between the lesson and the experience for modern students. Books come to life, teachers can add interactive content, and students can share their thoughts and collaborate. This is the classroom I want my daughter in.
