Integration X is a fast-growing Danish company developing workflow automation solutions for newspaper production. By integrating advanced technology with processes throughout the workflow, their ADWORKFLOW™ and OUTPUTWORKFLOW™ software solutions radically boost efficiency, improve quality and allow more time for meeting tight deadlines – while at the same time cutting operating costs and maximizing profitability. With rapid growth and a strong market position, Integration X has achieved the stability needed to continue developing their ADWORKFLOW and OUTPUTWORKFLOW applications which focus on two key areas in newspaper production: ad proofing and management; and editorial-to-press workflow.
Automate processes and optimize the rest
The initial version of ADWORKFLOW used a third-party component to provide some EPS and PDF processing capabilities. As their business grew, however, they began to run into problems that this component could not address. As a result, Integration X was forced to allocate more of their own technical resources to resolve these problems themselves, in order to avoid impacting customers in production.
“Newspaper production is about two things: speed and speed,” remarked Jacob Salomonsen, Marketing Director at Integration X. “Successful production systems need to automate processes wherever possible, and optimize the rest. We could see that the problems we were starting to run into would cause slowdowns in the production process, a situation neither we nor our customers could afford. We needed to ensure our PDF capabilities would handle anything that was thrown at it; contact with Adobe led us to Datalogics and the Adobe PDF Library.”
A quick summary of solution: Generating awareness, from blah to blah
“A quick test of the PDF Library through the Datalogics evaluation program confirmed that it would handle the problems we were seeing,” continued Salomonsen. “Shortly thereafter, Datalogics visited our offices in Copenhagen to discuss our requirements. Informative discussions with them revealed two other things: one, there were other features of PDF which we could be leveraging to provide even greater service to our customers; and secondly, there was another Adobe toolkit which would help us handle incoming EPS files and streamline our workflow internally. Like the Adobe PDF Library, Adobe Normalizer worked perfectly in our tests. We quickly decided to incorporate them both.”
“The integration of the PDF Library and Normalizer went smoothly. Questions and problems were quickly and competently answered by Datalogics Support personnel; and when we released ADWORKFLOW 1.5 it featured the PDF technology provided by Datalogics. Since then we’ve added many more features to our PDF handler; not only do we handle files that were problematic earlier, but we also incorporated a new feature which generates user-friendly preflight reports in which specific errors are annotated and flagged in a separate PDF layer on top of the submitted ad.”
Other features which leverage the capabilities of the Adobe toolkits include:
- Analyzing color use in PDF ads to predict total ink coverage on the page
- Identifying crop marks automatically; and cutting/scaling ads down to size as specified in the accounting system
- Extracting text
- Generating ad only pages without user intervention
Visible return on investment everyday
“We are quite happy with the Adobe PDF Library and Datalogics,” states Salomonsen. “At first we thought that the PDF Library might be too large for a company our size; but what we realized in the end was that we couldn’t afford not to use the Adobe PDF Library. It remains a critical piece of our core software, and is something from which we see a return on our investment everyday.”
