XFA PDFs aren’t true PDFs, but PDFs with interactive and dynamic XFA forms embedded in them. Most XFA documents are completely unintelligible to most PDF software and simply can’t be processed at all creating widespread challenges in forms processing workflows. Users are unable to open, view and edit, view or print documents. Additionally, these forms were deprecated in PDF 2.0 with little to no support for the millions of XFA documents still in circulation. How can you work with these types of forms? 

PDF Forms Flattener is a command-line application that automates batch processing and flattening of static XFA, dynamic XFA and AcroForms for easier printing, distribution and storage. It takes XFA forms and creates documents that any standard PDF software can support. 

Fillable text boxes become regular text. Buttons, check boxes, radio buttons and editable barcodes become drawings or images. Dates and numeric patterns in the data are preserved. You can also build appearances for fields and annotations when saving the document so as not to lose that data, and prior to flattening you can import all the forms data into your own databases.

This command-line tool can be integrated into software development programs or used to support in-house server-based forms flattening workflows. You can easily specify an input file, the name for the output file, and have the option to add a forms data file for import prior to flattening.  

PDF Forms Flattener 3.0.0 was recently released with some great new features, including new import, export, and conversion options. Users can now import and export data from XFA and AcroForm documents to several new formats to best meet their needs. New conversion options have been added as well, including the ability to convert XFA documents to AcroForms documents using the ‘-c’ parameter and more.
